Description

PCPs are well-positioned to identify youth experiencing suicidal thoughts and intervene to keep them safe. This session covers screening, assessing, and caring for youth experiencing suicidality.

Suicide is the #2 cause of death among youth ages 10-18. The Youth Suicide Prevention in Primary Care project has been working to assist primary care providers and practices to implement suicide-safer care using a process developed with consultation from national and Colorado local partners such as EDC, Zero Suicide, SAMHSA, NIMH, Office of Suicide Prevention, and a variety of community based pediatric physicians and psychiatrists.

In the spirit of embracing transformation, we aim to expand the network of youth-facing professionals screening, assessing, and caring for youth experiencing suicidality. Primary care providers are well-positioned to identify youth experiencing suicidal thoughts and intervene to help keep them safe. In this session, we will provide an overview of the suicide care pathway as well as offer ways to implement a care pathway in outpatient settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants should be better able to:

  1. Understand the importance of expanding the network of providers identifying and intervening with youth experiencing suicidality.
  2. Describe a suicide care pathway for patients at-risk for suicide in outpatient medical settings.
  3. Describe implementation considerations when screening for suicide in an outpatient setting.
