Ms. de Mello’s Symposium presentation was not recorded.  Below is a video used in her presentation that shows a dialogue between a mom whose son died by suicide, the officer who responded, and the community pastor who also was part of the process. Ms. de Mello uses this video in trainings to show examples of communication and how we can create better systems to support all those impacted by a suicide and the power of language. This workshop promotes understanding of the complex impact of suicide by examining the experience of loss survivors and first responders in the moments after a suicide, illustrating the healing power of joining forces in a trauma informed approach. Join Elaine as she examines experiences in the aftermath of suicide, to include perspectives of loss survivors and first responders.

Understanding the emotional and physical impact the journey has on both highlights the crucial need to support all who are involved in these tragic experiences. These perspectives, guided by loss survivors, have led to specialized training and trauma-informed protocols for first responders that have benefited all involved in the moments after a suicide occurs.
